A marker in memory of the first settlers of a 160-acre homestead near Thornfield has been placed on the property by a descendant, Kenneth McSwain, now of Hagerstown, Maryland.
George Meadows, who now owns the property, and has named it the Circle M Ranch, has set aside an area of ground to accommodate the marker which carries its inscription engraved in a steel plaque mounted in a concrete block raised some six inches above the ground.
Located near a 60-foot bur oak tree, the only remainder of a grove of oaks planted by the original owners, the marker reads:
"This is a memorial to the planting of this row of trees and to the first settlers in this community.
"William Bailey and Jane Rowis McSwain homesteaded these 160 acres in 1886 and Robert E. Boone, John and William Jr., their only children, planted these seeds in 1917. Their log house until recently stood 100 foot east of this point.
"Other homesteaders were Shed Akin, Jim Donaghue, James Evans, Jeff, John and Sam Humbyrd, Col. Homer Love, Peter Mallet, Pone Marsh, George Ragsdale, Jim Scott, Curn Tate, John Vickers.
"All these were patrons of the Fairview School which from 1882 to 1954 stood one mile N.W. of this point, and was a center of learning, religious worship and community activity.
U.S. Forest Approved.
"Present owner: George C. Meadows, Feb. 5, 1975."
